Jubilee visa 2025: how pilgrims in Italy can access it

Last Dec. 24, Jubilee 2025 began and Rome opened its doors to millions of pilgrims from all over the world, eager to have a unique experience of faith, culture and spirituality. For many of them, the first step is to obtain an entry visa. For the occasion, a special tourist visa dedicated to those who intend to participate in pilgrimages organized by local churches to Rome has been introduced.

In this article we will outline all the visa options available for the faithful who wish to travel to Italy for Jubilee 2025.

Entry visas: what and which are they

An entry visa is the authorization that allows a non-EU citizen to enter the territory of the Schengen Area, including the Republic of Italy. It consists of a "sticker" affixed to the passport or a valid travel document. There are four main categories of visas:

  • airport transit visa, which only allows passage through the international zones of airports in the territories of member states;
  • limited territorial validity (LTV) visa, valid only for the territory of one or more member states that issued the authorization;
  • Uniform Schengen Visa (VSU), which guarantees the holder to move throughout the entire territory of the member states;
  • Long-stay or "national" (VN) visa, which allows entry into the visa-issuing state for a long-term stay.

VSU and VN: what differences?

Let us now delve into the main differences between two visa categories listed above, the VSU and the VN. The distinction between the two lies in the length of stay:

  • the Uniform Schengen Visa (VSU) allows short stays, up to a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period. It also allows multiple entries;
  • The national visa (VN) is intended for extended stays, exceeding 90 days. It guarantees multiple entries and authorizes holders to travel to Schengen countries other than the one that issued it, for no more than 90 days in every 180 days.

Importantly, foreigners who wish to stay in Italy for more than 90 days must apply for a residence permit within 8 days of arrival. The application must be submitted at the Questura (police headquarters) of the place of stay.

Which visa to apply for the Jubilee

Non-EU pilgrims planning to visit Italy can choose from several types of visas:

  • Tourist visa: valid for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days;
  • "Tourism-Jubilee" visa: dedicated to visitors participating in diocesan pilgrimages;
  • Religious residence permit: reserved for foreign religious people, it is a visa that can last even longer than 90 days.

Let us now look at each of these options in detail.

Special tourism visa for Jubilee

As a rule, non-EU lay believers who plan to attend Jubilee 2025 can apply for a tourist visa, which allows for a maximum stay of 90 days.

However, to facilitate access for pilgrims, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation(MAECI) and the Dicastery for Evangelization (DPE) have introduced a special visa called "Tourism-Jubilee." This visa is reserved for those who participate in diocesan pilgrimages organized by a local Responsible person designated by the diocesan Ordinary. The Responsible Person must submit the necessary documentation for each participant to the appropriate Embassy or Consulate.

Who the "Tourism-Jubilee" visa is intended for.

Here is some essential information regarding this type of visa:

  • is reserved exclusively for pilgrims participating in trips organized by a diocese or a community within the diocese, under the guidance of a Local Leader officially appointed by the diocesan Ordinary;
  • the Local Manager should compile the list of pilgrims using the appropriate form and submit it to the appropriate Embassy or Consulate;
  • each pilgrim is required to provide the necessary documentation at the time of application;
  • the Local Manager should send a copy of the list to the DPE through the Apostolic Nuncio and by e-mail (visa@iubilaeum2025.va), attaching a scan in PDF or image format;
  • To avoid delays, it is advisable to submit the list at least 40 days before the scheduled date of the pilgrimage;
  • until the DPE receives the copy of the list, the file at the Embassy or Consulate will remain suspended.

Waiting time and approval

Processing applications for this special pilgrim visa can take 15 to 30 days. Therefore, it is essential to start the process well in advance of the travel date.

Other types of Jubilee visas

The residence permit for religious reasons is classified as a VN. This visa option is intended for priests and ministers of religion who need an extended stay to participate in religious events or collaborate with church organizations.

The main requirements for obtaining this permit include:

  • The proven condition of religious;
  • Documentation attesting to the religious character of the event;
  • means of subsistence not less than the amount established in the Consolidated Immigration Act (Legislative Decree No. 286 of July 25, 1998. ), in case the trip is not subsidized by religious bodies;
