Dear
Wai Members , if you have a U.S. passport that has expired or is about to expire, here are some directions on how to proceed with renewal, through the
U.S. Embassy in Italy.
We believe it is important to remember that the passport is the most important identity document for those staying in Italy. It is essential for
obtaining,
renewing or
converting any type of residence permit:
study, work,
pending employment,
family reunification or other. It is, also, important in the case of entering into a lease agreement,
registering with the registry office and obtaining an identity card. First of all, it will be useful for you to know that the application at the
Embassy, can be made not only by applicant in person but also by a third party, who must have an authorization signed by you and the government-issued digital ID card.
The consular officer always has the power, if it is necessary, to request that you go in person for an interview.
Here is what you will need:
- Personal documents, more detailed information on this will be given later.
- Credit card for payment of the fee.
- Old passport
The first step concerns the appointment, which must be scheduled, even online with the U.S. Embassy based in
Rome,
Florence,
Naples or
Milan. At the time of the same, you will have to make sure that you are in possession of necessary documents. If you miss them, you will need to schedule the appointment for another day. Remember also that, the consular officer has the power to request more information if he or she deems it necessary.
The second step required for the renewal of your U.S. passport involves filling out the
DS-82 form, which must be prepared and signed on the day of your interview with the ambassador. Along with this form, picking up on the first item on the list of things needed, personal documents that you will need to bring with you and present to the official in charge of the U.S. Embassy, there are
- a certificate proving the applicant's U.S. citizenship (original and copy),
- the expired or expiring passport and a digital ID (original and copy). In addition to these essential documents, 2 recent photographs and pay negotiation fees are also required. Payment of the corresponding fee for renewal of the U.S. passport can be made in actual dollars or euros, or with a credit card recognized in the United States and at the embassy on the day of the interview itself. The cost is
$110.00 and once the payment is made the money cannot be refunded under any circumstances, even if the procedure for any defect in form requires a new file.
