Jubilee 2025 is a worldwide religious event held in Rome, the Eternal City and heart of the Catholic Church. It is a moment of great spiritual significance for the faithful around the world.
The Jubilee represents a special occasion when the Church offers its followers the opportunity to receive indulgences and participate in a series of spiritual celebrations and rituals. Many tourists interested in visiting Italy also take the opportunity to plan their trip to discover the country in this special year.
In our article, we want to provide you with all the information you need to arrive prepared and apply, if necessary, for the entry visa for religious tourism purposes, which is mandatory under certain circumstances for non-EU citizens.
The Jubilee is held every 25 years: the last one was in the new millennium, in 2000. The current edition began on December 24, 2024 with theopening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica by Pope Francis. This Holy Year is considered special by the faithful around the world, seeking grace and mercy. The Jubilee will end on December 14, 2025, on the Solemnity of Jesus Christ Lord of the Universe, which will mark the official closing of the event.
The center of the Jubilee is Rome, where the faithful will converge to participate in the celebrations and obtain the special indulgences offered during this period. The city will be the focus of numerous religious and cultural events, involving not only residents but also visitors from around the world.
The calendar of events includes, for example, the Jubilee of the voluntary world, the Jubilee of youth, workers, sports, and many other thematic celebrations.
One of the most anticipated and well attended events is the Youth Jubilee 2025, which will be held from July 28 to August 3. The six-day program will include various religious and community engagements, including a welcome Mass on Tuesday, July 29, in St. Peter's Square and a vigil with the Holy Father on Saturday, August 2.
The Teen Jubilee, on the other hand, dedicated to children under the age of 18, will take place April 25-27.
To participate in the Jubilee in Rome, it is mandatory to register as a pilgrim through the official website by accessing the restricted area. With the registration you get the Pilgrim Card, which allows access to major events and Jubilee pilgrimages. In the case of groups, it is sufficient for the group leader to register, who will receive a QR code that will allow other participants to access.
Once in Rome, pilgrims can refer to the Info Point at Via della Conciliazione 7, where they will receive directions and support from volunteers.
The Jubilee 2025 is predicted to attract a significant number of pilgrims and faithful to Rome. Tourist arrivals to the city are estimated to increase dramatically, rising from 13 million in 2023 to 35 million during the event. This will result in a massive presence of pilgrims and faithful from all over the world, eager to participate in the Jubilee's unique celebrations and spiritual rituals.
While the Jubilee represents an exceptional opportunity for tourism in Italy, it also brings some challenges. Among the risks to consider areoverbooking, due to the city's limited accommodation capacity, and the possible shortage of qualified staff to handle the flow of tourists.
Those who wish to participate in Jubilee 2025 and come from countries outside the European Union may need to apply for a tourist visa to enter Italy. However, not all non-EU citizens require a tourist visa for stays of less than 90 days. Before making travel arrangements, it is advisable to consult the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) to check specific visa requirements.
Religious, such as priests and ministers of religion belonging to their orders, who need an extended stay in Italy to participate in the religious commitments of the Jubilee, must apply for a residence permit for religious reasons. This type of visa allows them to stay in Italy beyond 90 days and carry out ecclesiastical activities during the event.
On December 14, 2023, the "Modus Procedendi," aimed at clarifying the procedures for issuing entry visas on the occasion of the Jubilee, was signed. Thanks to this understanding, MAECI and the Vatican Authorities officially collaborate to facilitate the influx of pilgrims from countries subject to visa requirements, while ensuring that national security requirements are met.
In addition to the spiritual dimension, it is also crucial to consider the practical aspects of traveling to Italy during the Jubilee, such as logistical planning. For further updates on the event, please consult the official Jubilee 2025 website and resources provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
