What You Need To Know About The Transport Visa

A transport visa is a travel document that non-EU citizens require to transit through Italy. As it is a Schengen Uniform Visa USV type C, namely required for short duration, transit cannot exceed 90 days. This title allows non-EU citizens a short stay to carry out professional activities involving the transport of goods and/or persons. The transport in question may be of different kinds:
  • Road transport;
  • Transport by rail;
  • Air transport;
  • Maritime transport.
Let’s try to find out who it is for and what are the requirements to obtain this entry visa for Italy.

How To Apply For a Carriage Visa

Like all entry visas, the transport visa must be applied for at the Italian Embassy in the applicant’s country of origin. The latter must demonstrate when applying, a professional condition relevant to the visa requested. Moreover, the applicant has to provide all the specifications regarding transit through Italy and the type of transport. It follows that this title may be requested by certain categories of workers in the transport sector. The documentation required to obtain the title does not vary substantially from the more common visas (e.g. tourist visas). Let’s understand together what documents are required to apply for this title.

Where Can I Find The Documentation For The Visa?

Welcome Association Italy suggests, as always, to consult the institutional reference portal made available by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Through the page Visa for Italy, indeed, it is very simple to understand what is the documentation for the visa request. All you have to do is fill in a short form consisting of four fields:
  1. Nationality;
  2. Country of residence;
  3. Duration of the stay;
  4. Reason for the stay.
  When you have completed the form, the system responds by providing all the information concerning the documentation to submit for the request.

Transport Visa Documentation

As mentioned above, the documentation required for this title does not differ too much from the most common visas. Below is a list of the documents required for processing the application for the transport visa:
  • Visa application form
  • Documentation proving status as a transporter
  • Passport-size photograph;
  • Passport valid for more than the duration of the visa;
  • Documents certifying the purpose of the stay in Italy;
  • Certification of possession of economic means of subsistence, following the Directive of the Ministry of the Interior of 1.3.2000;
  • Documents relating to the accommodation in which one will be staying;
  • Health insurance covering a minimum amount of expenses equivalent to €30,000 for emergency hospitalization and repatriation, valid throughout the Schengen area.

Timing And Obtaining Title

Once the documentation has been submitted, and duly completed, the applicant must wait for the Embassy to process the application. The procedure does not have a set duration and depends mainly on the workload of the embassy or consulate. As stated in Farnesina’s FAQ, it can take between 15 and 45 days to issue a visa. This information, in conjunction with the appropriate compilation of the documentation to be presented, could avoid unpleasant surprises, such as a refulas of the title.

 Transport Visa And Transit Visa

It is necessary to pay close attention to the difference between a transport visa and a transit visa. These two are similar, fortunately only in form. A transit visa, unlike a transport visa, is a title that a non-EU citizen, coming from and going to a country outside the European Union, requires in order to “cross European borders”. This visa can only be issued on condition that the applicant is authorized to enter the country of destination. Hoping to have been helpful to our members and to have cleared up some doubts about the transport title, Welcome Association Italy wishes you a pleasant journey.
