First celebrated on April 22, 1970 in the United States at the suggestion of Senator Gaylord Nelson, World Earth Day is now in its 55th year.Earth Day 2025 is an opportunity to reflect on the environmental challenges that so strongly characterize our time and to seek possible solutions.
This year's theme for World Earth Day is renewable energy, represented by the slogan "Our power, Our planet." One of the key points of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development concerns the urgency of combating climate change. Among the most effective actions to reduce the impact of global warming is the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable sources such as wind, hydro and solar power. These green alternatives produce no greenhouse gas emissions and help limit the rise in the Planet's temperature.
In 2015, the world's leading political representatives drew up a list of 17 sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030.
This Agenda is a guide to combat major global challenges, such as poverty, hunger, gender inequality, and ensure steady progress toward sustainable development.
Specifically, some of the objectives that are part of the list are:
Events and initiatives are being organized throughout Italy to celebrate this important day, raising awareness and educating young people and adults about sustainability and an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Here are some of the most anticipated events:
In Rome, Earth Day 2025 will be celebrated in the Village for the Earth, organized by Earth Day Italia. From April 10 to 13, the Villa Borghese park will come alive with hundreds of artistic performances, screenings, games, workshops, book presentations, debates and concerts. In the 2024 edition, there were more than 600 events.
The first two days (April 10 and 11) will be dedicated to all schools, from primary to high school. In particular, each school will be able to actively participate in the event by submitting a project related to Agenda 2030 within the #IOCITENGO contest.
Another interesting initiative dedicated to youngsters is the "Murals for the Earth" project, which involves the creation of a mural in collaboration between schools in Rome and street art artist Moby Dick.
It will be up to the children to present drafts of the drawing-inspired by the theme of environmental sustainability and Agenda 2030-that will then be completed by the famous artist during an educational workshop on street art techniques.
The city of Turin is once again launching a major event for Earth Day 2025, organized by the Club Silencio Foundation. The event will be held on Saturday, April 19 in the Royal Gardens and will consist of meetings with sustainability experts, interactive workshops, and a space for children with playful workshops.
At the end of the day there will be the highlight: a "one night at the museum" experience at the Royal Museums of Turin, with DJ sets, performances by various artists and thematic tours.
Aiming to raise awareness of climate change and renewable energy among as many people as possible, RaiPlay is organizing a multimedia marathon for April 22. Throughout the day, from 8 a.m. to midnight, all kinds of content (documentaries, interviews, concerts, talk shows) will be broadcast live, but always with sustainable development as the central theme.
Another event not to be missed-which you can also attend for free live-is Earth Day Italy's Concert for the Earth.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Fuksas Cloud (Rome), and this year's featured artists will be Tiromancino.
Italian universities play a key role in promoting environmental sustainability through innovative projects and green initiatives. In recent years, many universities have engaged in research and development programs related to the green transition.
The University of Bologna has promoted the"Sustainable Multicampus" program, which seeks the reduction of the environmental impact of the university community's activities and consumption, encourages sustainable mobility and promotes the use of renewable energy on campuses.
These projects demonstrate how academia can be an engine of change, contributing concretely to the fight against climate change and the spread of sustainable practices.
